Vital Foods In Caribbean Cuisine

Contrary to popular belief foods in the Caribbean are not governed by the famous food pyramid but by the food wheel which consists of six main food categories.  The food groups include:
  1. Staples
  2. Legumes
  3. Dark green, leafy and yellow vegetables
  4. Fruits
  5. Meats & Foods from Animals 
  6. Fats and Oils



You have probably not given this much thought but there are many reasons why we chose to eat the foods that we do, and some of those reasons are:

  • Convenience/Cost
  • Health/ Nutrients/ Satiety
  • Taste/Smell
  • Culture/History/Familiarity 
You’ve probably just agreed to all of the above about your favorite meal(s).
