This year is not over yet and has barely started for Nanichi who has been giving back to the community. On February 26th 2011 Nanichi received a solo segment in the Voyage to Utopia fashion show hosted by Marymount University’s African Caribbean Student Association (ACSA), Black Student Alliance (BSA), and Latino Student Association (LSA). All the proceeds from the show went to Martha’s Table and Kakenya’s Dream. Martha’s Table finds solutions to poverty in the short term with food and clothing programs and in the long term by breaking the cycle of poverty with education and family strengthening programs. Martha's Table's mission is to help at-risk children, youth, families and individuals in our community improve their lives by providing educational programs, food, clothing and enrichment opportunities. Kakenya’s dream is a non-profit organization. Many years ago, when Kakenya set out to attain post-secondary education in the United States, she reached out to the people of her village. Their generosity helped pave the way towards the leadership and independence that she achieved today. Through Kakenya’s dream, Kakenya is giving back to the young women so that their dreams too can come true. ![]() On May 5th 2011 Nanichi received a solo segment in the Maryland University fashion show hosted by the Maryland University Echelon Fashion Society. This year the show’s theme was focused on HIV/AIDS prevention. This is a pressing issue in the DMV(D.C, Maryland, Virginia) area where every 1 out of 20 people in D.C are living with AIDS. The title of this year’s production was “I AM….” it represents a group of people living with HIV/AIDS because people living with HIV/AIDS are of different ethnic groups, cultural backgrounds and styles. Having HIV/AIDS does not make one look or act different from another individual. Martha’s Table http://www.marthastable.org/ Kakenya’s Dream http://www.kakenyasdream.org/
