"I believe that it is easy to introduce this collection because as a designer I have grown and evolved and now inspired by other things and places in life. And with that I am introducing the Nora Collection."
Nora means “my skin”, a word native to the Garinagu (singular Garifuna) descendents of the Arawaks, Caribs and African people and used around the year 1666, over the years the language has changed and words have been influenced.
I chose Nora because it is very personal to me. This collection inspired by Africa in many ways. The skin is the largest, most durable organ of the human body. It holds and protects everything else that is vital for life, and in a sense the skin is the first thing formed then the other organs follow. The connection is very important."
According to Ilka, the designs in Nora are exuded with a different energy and because of that pieces will be added to the collection as inspiration is gained and pieces are made. “I do not want to force designs and begin constructing instead I prefer to wait on that moment when I am most inspired, then I’ll know that the piece will be great and memorable.”
